Their focus on expertise, efficiency, and reliability quickly earned them a strong reputation with commercial real estate professionals.
In 2014, Matt Short joined the firm as an attorney, bringing fresh perspectives and a commitment to excellence. Under Greg Hughes’ mentorship, Matt honed his skills in title law and commercial real estate transactions.
Matt took over the leadership of the firm in 2020 and continued to build on its legacy, growing the business while maintaining the high standards of service clients have come to expect.

R. Matthew “Matt” Short
Founding Attorney
Matt Short is the owner and managing member of Short Commercial Title and Escrow, where he oversees title examinations, commitment issuance, and manages the firm’s closing calendar and multi-state practice. He also interfaces with state and Atlanta sections of the title and real estate bar, ensuring the firm’s operations remain streamlined and effective.
Matt began his legal career in 2013 and shifted into commercial title and escrow in 2014 under the mentorship of Greg Hughes. With over a decade of experience, Matt’s approach to title work is simple: Complicated shouldn’t mean difficult. He’s known for being thorough, efficient, and highly responsive, solving issues proactively so clients can stay focused on their deal, not the hurdles.
Outside of work, Matt enjoys spending time with his twin daughters and exploring Midtown Atlanta. He’s an avid reader, a watch enthusiast, and plays drums and guitar in a local music project, staying connected to his creative side.
Greg Hughes
Counsel
With 40 years of experience in title insurance and the closing of commercial real estate transactions, Greg Hughes has become a recognized expert in his field. He specializes in title examination and works closely with underwriting counsel to address complex title issues and ensure smooth closings. A graduate of Emory University School of Law and a member of the Georgia Bar Association, Greg has spent decades helping purchasers, lenders, lessees, and sellers navigate the legal complexities of commercial real estate.
In his free time, Greg enjoys flat water kayaking and playing basketball with his grandchildren. He’s also an experienced white-water rafting guide on the Chattooga River. Greg believes in the value of “thinking before you speak,” especially when it comes to the careful, detailed nature of real estate closings.
Alex Guillermo
Associate Attorney
Alex is an Associate Attorney at Short Commercial Title and Escrow, where he focuses on commercial real estate transactions. He has deep experience running commercial title examinations and works closely with underwriting counsel to proactively eliminate title issues and exceptions. Alex also drafts and reviews closing documents, coordinates the closing process, and ensures that each deal is executed and recorded properly.
With a legal background that spans multiple jurisdictions, Alex earned his law degree in the Dominican Republic, followed by an LLM from Northwestern University and a JD from Emory University. His experience ranges from tax law to corporate finance and intellectual property, but it was the fast-paced, collaborative nature of commercial real estate that clicked for him. Outside of work, Alex keeps life interesting with boxing, soccer, and stand-up comedy—an unexpected outlet that sharpens his thinking and brings some levity to the high-stakes world of law.
Nicole Alvarez
Senior Commercial Real Estate Paralegal
Nicole joined Short Commercial Title and Escrow in 2014 and now serves as Senior Commercial Real Estate Paralegal. She manages all phases of complex transactions, from title review and due diligence to document preparation and closing coordination. She also oversees the firm’s escrow account—ensuring every dollar is received, disbursed, and reconciled with care and precision.
Her background in criminal justice and paralegal studies set the foundation for a career built on responsiveness, accuracy, and a strong work ethic. Nicole is passionate about client relationships and leads the training and development of fellow paralegals. Outside the office, she enjoys dog training and rescue, home improvement projects, and spending time with her husband, son, and three dogs. She also speaks conversational German and is becoming increasingly fluent in Spanish thanks to her bilingual household.
